The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch Weekend takes place on 24th and 25th January.

The world’s biggest bird survey is celebrating its 30th birthday and to participate you just need to spend an hour counting the birds in your garden or local park, recording the highest number of each species you see.

Join the RSPB for a three-and-a-hour cruise which incorporates a visit of approximately two hours to Dorset Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve on Brownsea Island.

Brownsea Island FerriesThousands of birds flock to the island’s fresh water and saline lagoons to feed including large numbers of avocets and shelducks. This cruise offers you the chance to see some of the island’s diverse wildlife and habitats, including one of the UK’s rarest mammals, the red squirrel.

RSPB guides will be on hand to help with the identification of birds and answer any of your questions throughout the trip.

Topics covered include spectacular eruptions, dramatic lava tunnels and how volcanoes grow.

Arne HeathEnjoy a day’s walk looking at wintering birds around the spectacular Arne area on Sunday 11th January .

The walk starts in the morning at Arne, where Spoonbills often winter and Dartford Warblers appear on the heath.

After lunch at a nearby pub the walk will commence from Middlebere to look over tidal inlets of Poole Harbour. Avocets are usually feeding here and sometimes Hen Harriers fly over the reeds.
